My Daily Walk with Jesus

The Names of God

Each name of God reveals part of His character and gives us strength in our journey.

“Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him” (Genesis 5:24). The original Hebrew meaning for “walked” implies that Enoch went to and from with God, continually conversing with Him and growing closer to Him.

What a beautiful picture for us to keep in mind in our daily walk with our Father. One way to walk in power every day is to take the names of God names with us.

Heather-Dawn Small shares her own experience on how God’s names can give us strength in our journey.

The Almighty God

You who sit down in the High God’s presence, spend the night in Shaddai’s shadow. Ps 91:1 The Message

I love to study the names of God. Each name reveals something new about God’s character. There was a time in my spiritual experience when I yearned to learn more about God. I knew He is a God of love. But reading through the Bible, especially the Old Testament I found myself challenged to see God as loving, caring, and compassionate.

Then a number of years ago I came across a book titled The Names of God by Ann Spangler. I found myself absorbed in the book. Each week she presented a new name of God in the Hebrew or Greek. There are readings for each day of the week all based on one Name of God. I was thrilled and amazed as I delved deeper and deeper into a study of God’s Names.

Many of us already know some of these names: Jehovah Shalom – God is peace; Abba – Daddy; and Jehovah Rohi – God is my Shepherd. But the name I love the most is found in Psalms 91:1, our text for today. El Shaddai – the Almighty God. The God with whom nothing is impossible. Oh, how I love this name. How precious the Name has become to me.

Through the past decade of my life there have been some major trials that I have faced, both personally and within my family. This name, El Shaddai – the Almighty God, has given me strength because I know that no matter what my trial, the Almighty God is able to see me through. Whether He choses to solve it, remove it, or leave it for a while – sometimes a long while – it matters not. I know He is in control.

You see the El Shaddai is the God who calmed the raging seas, who saved Daniel in the lion’s den, who gave David the victory over Goliath, and who parted the Red Sea for the Israelites to walk through. There are so many stories in the Bible that show us the power of the El Shaddai.

Do you want that power in your life today? Then all you have to do is to spend time each day under His shadow. Learn to lean on God. He will never let you down. If you want to study more about God’s character and have access to the internet, do a search for “The Names of God” and you will be amazed at the information that is available. Use this information to help you develop a deeper understanding of the character of God. He is a God of love, caring, and compassion.
